Matcha 101

Uji and
Kagoshima

Almost all Japanese matcha comes from a
handful of regions, and the two behind our
teas sit at opposite ends of the country.

Uji, in Kyoto, is the historic centre of
matcha. Tea has been grown there for
centuries and the region is closely tied to
the way matcha is made and drunk. The
climate is cooler, the harvest later, and
the growing is largely done on a small scale.

Kagoshima is at the southern end of
Kyushu. It is warmer, the season starts
earlier, and the region is known for modern
growing practice and a high proportion of
certified organic production.

Uji carries the history. Kagoshima
carries the scale and much of the organic
certification. Both make excellent tea,
and one is not a lesser version of the other.
